Robert Cyril Oates holds a bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies from the University of Western Australia. He is also a graduate of the University of London, Department of History. Started his career at HSBC Group in 2000, Oates has assumed different roles within the Group since then. Oates served as a manager in the Corporate Investment Banking and Markets Department at HSBC Japan between 2001 and 2003. Oates served as Deputy Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at HSBC Qatar between 2003 and 2005 and served as Deputy Head of Credit Risk Management at HSBC Indonesia between 2005 and 2008. He worked as Deputy General Manager of Risk at HSBC Thailand between 2008 and 2011. Between 2011 and 2015, he assumed the role of European Region President of Global Banking, Technology and Services at HSBC Group. Served as Deputy General Manager of Risk at HSBC India between 2015 and 2017, Oates worked as Regional Head of HSBC Asia Pacific, Corporate Banking Credit & Market Risk at HSBC Group between 2017 and 2020. As of 2020, he was appointed as Regional Head of Credit and Market Risk for HSBC (EMEA) Europe, Middle East and Africa. Oates has been serving as a Board Member of HSBC Türkiye since 13 December 2021.
